How to translate Key Biblical Terms

  1. Study the meaning

  2. Compare with similar words

  3. Think of possible solutions 4. Choose the most appropriate term 5. Test your choice

44

Think of possible solutions Remember the ways of translating unknown ideas Use a descriptive phrase Substitute something similar that is known to the receptor language speakers Use a word from another language

45

More about foreign words A word that has been borrowed from another language and is widely used in the new receptor language may be called a borrowed word. Borrowed words are understood by speakers of the new receptor language, even if they do not speak the language from which the word was borrowed So borrowed words are acceptable in a translation 46

More about foreign words A foreign word is one that is not known and used by speakers of the receptor language. Foreign words do not communicate meaning. They should be avoided, if possible. If it is really necessary to use a foreign word, find ways to teach the meaning.

a descriptive phrase or a general word A footnote a glossary entry 47

Remember this example? John went into the hotel and sat down. He took up the menu and began to choose what he would eat. The choice was between tim-sam and salad, or laksa, or gado-gado, or something called escargots.

He had decided to order laksa with a cup of coffee when he saw Kim Sai enter the restaurant. She was wearing a song-sam and holding a wok in her hand. 48

Think of possible solutions How would we express synagogue using a descriptive phrase? a house for teaching Gods laws a meeting place of the Jews

a church of the Jews a prayer house of the Jews 49

Think of possible solutions How would we express Sabbath using a descriptive phrase? a resting day of the Jews a day for worshipping God God's holy day

50

How to translate Key Biblical Terms

  1. Study the meaning

  2. Compare with similar words

  3. Think of possible solutions 4. Choose the most appropriate term 5. Test your choice

51

Choose the most appropriate term

How well will non-Christians understand the proposed word or phrase? Does the proposed term focus on the most important part of the meaning of the original term? Does the proposed term include any meaning which is contrary to the meaning of the original term? 52

Take into account

Other versions Consider the way in which the term is translated in any meaning-based versions of the Bible used in the area For example, versions in the national language or related languages

Denominational viewpoints

The translator must translate accurately However, when there is room for different interpretations, avoid using words that would offend any denomination in the area. 53

Take into account

Views expressed by church leaders and others Any strongly held local feelings Input from the translation committee and the translation consultant When appropriate, the final decision should be made by the committee

54

How to translate Key Biblical Terms

  1. Study the meaning

  2. Compare with similar words

  3. Think of possible solutions 4. Choose the most appropriate term 5. Test your choice

55

Test the key terms to see if they communicate the meaning

What do non-Christians understand when they hear this term? What do Christians understand it to mean? Is this term acceptable to church leaders and to others? 56

Test the key terms to see if they communicate the meaning

When there is disagreement Go slowly in making a decision

Keep an open mind Give people an opportunity to express their views

Prayer and reasoned discussion will result in right decisions and in friendly agreement 57

Key terms list

Prepare a list of the proposed terms so that these can be studied by reviewers and other church leaders This gives people an opportunity to make suggestions When agreement has been reached

the list can be distributed to preachers, teachers and interpreters so that everyone can use the term consistently 58
