Discussions on AI for Consultants
SIL and UBS have seen the need for translation consultants to be aware of how to use AI in their work, how to encourage the translation teams that they are working with to use AI, and to understand the implications of using AI in Bible translation. As we move forward in these discussions, we would like to see consultants and translation teams confident that they know what resources can help them and how to use them.

The Bible Translator is the leading academic journal dedicated to the theory and practice of Bible translation. It has been published continuously since 1950, and exists firstly to serve those directly involved in Bible translation, aiming to encourage sharing of the results of their research and records of their practice. It exists also to provide a forum for a wider community of scholars and students interested in a range of disciplines which influence the translation of the Bible, and encourages engagement between scholars and translators. Our Animal Nature
Neuroscience is discovering that much of what we have thought of as uniquely human reasoning (including moral reasoning) we at least partly share with other mammals. Part of the relevance of this for negotiating meaning is that much of our brain activity is outside of our conscious awareness and inaccessible to us. In part this is because it originates from the bottom up, from sub-cortical regions of our brains, and only later is rationalized.

Negotiating Meaning-part 3: Cultural/Cognitive Thought Styles
Mary Douglas believes there is a grid/group structure which describes the way people think in various contexts. She believes this results in four major thought styles which tend to guide our thinking along the twin axes of social solidarity and personal freedom: individualist, hierachist, communitarian, and isolate. Interestingly, other scholars (Alan Fiske, Richard, Shweder, and Jonathan Haidt) have seen similar patterns, though they usually give them somewhat different names. This series overlaps with the series parts 1 and 2.

Our Unconscious Selves
Much of what our brains do goes on outside of our conscious awareness. Sub-cortical areas of the brain are involved, and at times we relegate what we do to automatic thinking, or procedural memory. This makes us more efficient, but less self-aware.

Embodied mind/perception
Embodied cognition can be already be seen clearly in the area of perception. Because of the way our bodies experience the world and our adaptation to that experience, we come to see (and hear a feel and taste and smell) things in certain ways, even when those ways sometimes fool us (that is, can be shown to not be giving us a true picture of the world).

Negotiating Meaning-part 1: The Brain
Translators negotiate meaning when they attempt to mediate an original communication into a new context. But meaning has already been negotiated whenever the original communication took place. Translators need to understand this process at various levels, from the individual and cognitive to the social and cultural. The first PP presentation and the article it is built on represent an overview of all three series under the "negotiating meaning" heading.

The Otherness of the Text
The papers in this series were written in the early 1990's, but still have some good examples of why it is necessary to negotiate the meaning of texts in translation. The video speaks as if there is only one paper, but it equally applies to both. The graphics mostly speak for themselves.

Mirror Neurons and a Theory of Mind
These post all have to do with mirror neurons and theory of mind. Mirror Neurons are brain cells which fire automatically (yet seemingly empathically) when we watch others act or be acted upon. Some neuroscientists think they are the basis of human language and communication. Theory of mind has a very specific and technical use in neuroscience. It means that at some point (verbally around 4 years old) children realize that what someone else is thinking may not be the same as what they are thinking. This ability to simulate what others are thinking is critical to negotiating meaning.

Andy Warren-RothlinLe Sycomore

What do babies know (and when do they know it?)
Humans do not have the largest of brains (elephants have bigger brains), nor the largest in relation to their bodies (mice win out there). But humans are born with their brains less developed than any other animal. This means that most of our brain development happens within the context of socialization. This may explain much of the difference between us and the other animals (e.g. language). Episode #4 of https://map.bloomfire.com/posts/604669-mind-and-brain-video is also relevant to this series.

Our Multiple Selves
These posts posit that beside the individualist, hierarchist, and communitarian selves of Douglas, Fiske, Haidt, and Shweder, we have other internal selves as well (past/present/future, experiencing/remembering, fast/slow, sensing/moving, conscious/unconscious). In some sense these internal selves need to be negotiated before we can negotiate higher levels of meaning (Goffman) with the selves of others. Interestingly, these posts can also be categorized according to the structure of the Negotiating Meaning series: the brain, language and society, and thought styles.

Memory
Most neuroscientists agree that memory is dynamic and reconstructive, which has a least a couple of implications for Bible translation. One is that it supports a view of (biblical, church, community) tradition as living and dynamic as opposed to simply static and conservative (though of course both memory and tradition have those aspects as well). Another implication is that if we want people to engage with scripture, we need to create contexts for processing the texts in multiple ways and on multiple occasions so as to move the experience/encounter from working memory to long-term memory, where it can become a part of further and larger dynamic and creative processes of personal and community memory.

Brain Anatomy
Brain anatomy can be seen from at least three different perspectives: 1. structural, 2. topographic, and 3. functional. Humans (and animals) share huge amounts of basic structural anatomy, while we are obviously wired quite differently across species and individuals. Topographic anatomy refers to the fact that we have brain maps of our viscera, the skin of our bodies (quite detailed in our parietal lobes), and our peri-personal space, as well as maps of the world around us. But it is functional anatomy that is perhaps the key to how our brains work, Functional anatomy describes neural networks which are then referred to as if they were structural (e.g. Broca's area is the network or area that is activated when producing speech).

Negotiating Meaning-part 2: Language and Society
Scholars as diverse as Mary Douglas, (anthropology), Erving Goffman (social psychology) and George Lakoff (cognitive linguistics) have recognized the importance of negotiation in communication. Alan Fiske's claim that language is always an attempt to negotiate human relations as well as to refer to things and ideas forms part of a thread that runs from Jonathan Haidt's social intuitionism and George Lakoff's experiential realism through to Mary Douglas' grid-group and thought styles. This negotiation takes place at all individual<>social levels, and can be analyzed from any number of perspectives. This series overlaps with the series parts 1 and 3.
