Our Animal Nature
Neuroscience is discovering that much of what we have thought of as uniquely human reasoning (including moral reasoning) we at least partly share with other mammals. Part of the relevance of this for negotiating meaning is that much of our brain activity is outside of our conscious awareness and inaccessible to us. In part this is because it originates from the bottom up, from sub-cortical regions of our brains, and only later is rationalized.
