Extracted text from 0CultureOutcome.docx:

Local Culture / Church Traditions Outcome: Recognize aspects of our own cultures and traditions and know how to deal with them in our translations

What you will learn:

  1. How culture, language and tradition naturally and unconsciously form our identities 2. How we react to cultural and personal identities that are not our own 3. How to negotiate the different cultural perspectives involved in the translation

Focus: negotiating the biblical meaning within all the relevant cultural contexts

KNOW - STUDY Biblical culture/tradition The translator's culture/tradition Any other relevant cultures/tradition [Patricia Ryan YouTube / TED talk -"Don't Insist on English!"]

SKILL - PRACTICE Basic window management, navigation, find, biblical terms Examples: customs (vows, sandals, elders), terms (body parts as metaphors, holy)

Apply (negotiating cultures and traditions):

  1. Find unfamiliar cultural elements in the text and negotiate what to do in translation. 2. Find where we disagree with others involved in the translation (e.g. from different church traditions) and negotiate what to do in translation.

Summary of desired outcome: Recognize how our different cultures and traditions influence our translations and how to deal with that
