Ian, Thanks so much for reminding us of the the interplay between natural environment/ genetics/ culture in explaining various (esp. human) phenomena. While this story is certainly not the only one in the development of human language, it does seem quite likely that factors such as the environment did/do in fact play a role, and one that has not even been considered heretofore.
