The Evolution of Cooperation

The Harvard mathematician Martin Nowak argues that apart from selection and mutation, the notion of cooperation should be taken into account as a third principle of evolution. Nowak corrects Richard Dawkins' "selfish gene" theory and other theories in which evolution is seen only in terms of either violence or randomness.

Nowak's ideas have been picked up by the systematic (or rather: analytic) theologian Sarah Coakley (see my earlier post of Coakley's Gifford lectures of 2012). Coakley looks for a fruitful dialogue between the sciences and theology, on the one hand to free theology from its fundamentalist, anti-science parti pris, on the other hand to contribute meaningfully to the metaphysical, ethical, and meta-ethical questions raised by the new developments in evolutionary theory.

The Evolution of Cooperation: Why We Need Each Other to Succeed

Martin Nowak, Harvard University 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 8, 2013 Coffman Theater University of Minnesota, Minneapolis

During his upcoming Public Lecture, evolutionary biologist Martin Nowak, author of the best-selling book SuperCooperators, will share his cutting-edge research on the mysteries of cooperation. According to Nowak, many problems that challenge us today can be traced back to a tension between what is good and desirable for society as a whole and what is good and desirable for an individual. This conflict is illustrated by global problems such as climate change, pollution, hunger, and overpopulation. Nowak argues that cooperationnot competitionis the key to the evolution of complexity.
