Aa 0:000:00 MATTHEW 1 1The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, 4and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, 8and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, 11and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. 12And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. 17So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us). 24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

NIV Jesus Teaches Nicodemus 3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2He came to Jesus at night and said, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him. 3Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.* 4How can someone be born when they are old? Nicodemus asked. Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mothers womb to be born! 5Jesus answered, Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spiritgives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, Youmust be born again. 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. 9How can this be? Nicodemus asked. 10 You are Israels teacher, said Jesus, and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaventhe Son of Man.* 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. 16For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of Gods one and only Son. 19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. John Testifies Again About Jesus 22After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. 23Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24(This was before John was put in prison.) 25An argument developed between some of Johns disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. 26They came to John and said to him, Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordanthe one you testified aboutlook, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him. 27To this John replied, A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28You yourselves can testify that I said, I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him. 29The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegrooms voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30He must become greater; I must become less. 31The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. 33Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God* gives the Spirit without limit. 35The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. 36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for Gods wrath remains on them. Text info NASB The New Birth 3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named ANicodemus, a Bruler of the Jews; 2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, ARabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these 1Bsigns that You do unless CGod is with him. 3 Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one Ais born 1again he cannot see Bthe kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus *said to Him, How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mothers womb and be born, can he? 5 Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of Awater and the Spirit he cannot enter into Bthe kingdom of God. 6 AThat which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, You must be born 1again. 8 AThe wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit. 9 Nicodemus said to Him, How can these things be? 10 Jesus answered and said to him, Are you Athe teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, Awe speak of what we know and Btestify of what we have seen, and Byou do not accept our testimony. 12 If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 ANo one has ascended into heaven, but BHe who descended from heaven: Cthe Son of Man. 14 As AMoses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must Bthe Son of Man Cbe lifted up; 15 so that whoever 1believes will Ain Him have eternal life. 16 For God so Aloved the world, that He Bgave His 1Conly begotten Son, that whoever Dbelieves in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God Adid not send the Son into the world Bto judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 AHe who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of Bthe 1only begotten Son of God. 19 This is the judgment, that Athe Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for Btheir deeds were evil. 20 AFor everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But he who Apractices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God. Johns Last Testimony 22 After these things Jesus and His Adisciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and Bbaptizing. 23 John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people were coming and were being baptized 24for AJohn had not yet been thrown into prison. 25 Therefore there arose a discussion on the part of Johns disciples with a Jew about Apurification. 26And they came to John and said to him, ARabbi, He who was with you Bbeyond the Jordan, to whom you Chave testified, behold, He is baptizing and all are coming to Him. 27 John answered and said, AA man can receive nothing unless it Bhas been given him from heaven. 28You yourselves 1are my witnesses that I said, AI am not the 2Christ, but, I have been sent ahead of Him. 29He who has the bride is Athe bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegrooms voice. So this Bjoy of mine has been made full. 30He must increase, but I must decrease. 31AHe who comes from above is above all, Bhe who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. AHe who comes from heaven is above all. 32 What He has seen and heard, of that He Atestifies; and Ano one receives His testimony. 33He who has received His testimony Ahas set his seal to this, that God is true. 34For He whom God has Asent speaks the words of God; 1Bfor He gives the Spirit without measure. 35 AThe Father loves the Son and Bhas given all things into His hand. 36He who Abelieves in the Son has eternal life; but he who Bdoes not 1obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.
