Started reading this, and I appreciated this comment: "As signs of identity are conventional, i.e. there is broad social agreement regarding what a prototypical representative of an identity should look like, how he/she behaves and what he/she believes, every individual claiming a certain identity must fulfill these criteria at least to a certain extent. This property of the anatomy of belonging does not support the widely held opinion that the person him/herself is the utmost authority on his/her identity, and everybody should accept the identity that an individual asserts. As the book shows, the way identities work is a bit more complex than this kind-hearted inclusive statement leads us to believe. "
