Sinai Palimpsest Project
This is from Norm Mundhenk:
I wonder how many of you have heard of the Sinai Palimpsest Project. I knew nothing about it until I opened the latest issue (January 2018) of Smithsonian magazine, which has a fascinating article about it (the article is cleverly titled “Books of Revelation”). The basic details are that new imaging techniques have been developed which allow people to photograph and study the underlying texts of palimpsest manuscripts (that is, the text that was there before the manuscript was re-used to produce a new document). A study has been made of 6,800 pages from 74 palimpsests from the library of St. Catherine’s Monastery in the Sinai. The article compares the importance of the results to the discoveries of the Nag Hammadi library and the Dead Sea Scrolls, in terms of what this adds to our knowledge of ancient writings. According to the article, the results of the work will be put online by UCLA early in 2018.
