A New Thin BT Book of a Big Title: AI, Cultural Bias and future faithful BT
A new book in 2020: Faithfully Rendering God's Words --Artificial Intelligence, Cultural Bias and the Future of Faithful Bible Translation
I started pondering the questions along with the topics in the title of the book before I was working with AllTheWord.org and believing the potential of advanced technology to enhance the cost-effectiveness of the Bible Translation, but I was ridiculous enough and dare not to ask more. I am glad that some theologians started the dialogues and published in these topics. As I am skimming through the book, I try to formulate some of my thoughts with the following questions:
1. What questions should we ask about those topics? By Whom? Answered by whom?
2. What disciplines are related and are involved in those topics?
3. Whose(What's) bias and what kind of "cultural" bias in what scopes are we talking about along the context of Bible Translation?
4, What are the presupposition and assumptions for the revisit of the topic of the faithfulness of Bible Translation?
5. What are the new insights that AI or recent technology development brings to Bible Translation, including the pre-translation stages and the post-translation stage?
6. What is the nature of translations(beyond a mean), what makes translations different from other instrumental technology? What would be the implication of the answer to the previous question?
7. How humans are different from the machine in general and in the process of translating the Bible?
I also have a more personal/emotional question about the relevance of Scriptural Engagement and Bible translation in this time of COVID19.
I think some of the issues of AI and bias of Bible translation should be addressed sooner rather than later.
Here I invite you to explore, interact, and dialogue along with these questions together.
