Networking on Orality, Memory, Performance and Other Related Disciplines

Nov 19, 2021 4:30-6:00pm

SBL Annual Meeting in San Antonio

Theme: The Bible, Performance, and Social Location

Scholars from various disciplines are invited to a networking session to engage each other on their research in the fields listed above; all scholars and practitioners interested in these areas are welcome! This year we will explore the impact of social and cultural location on the process of meaning-making when a text is performed by various bodies in space and time. Questions we will consider may include: "How does the body and voice of an interpreter impact the interpretation in performance?” and “How might performance open up conversations in class, in worship gatherings, and in research about the role of social location (in the ancient world and today) in our understanding and use of Scripture?” Live performance may generate emotional reactions that are new or potentially disruptive. We invite participants to notice these reactions and engage them in discussion. Small group “breakouts” and large group discussion will follow a framing presentation and a live performance. The session will be hybrid: in-person as well as accessible by Zoom. To register for the event, follow this link: https://fuller-edu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIsd-mgrTkuHtchJFYdpdvkzc5LbiQK13XQ.
