UBS Handbooks for Translators on TIPs

We just finished adding all the Translator's Handbooks for the Old Testament to the Translation Insights & Perspective tool (https://tips.translation.bible/). While Bible translation professionals have numerous ways to access them, the general public does not. (They could of course purchase them but they typically don't because they don't see themselves as the target group.) I do believe that these commentaries hold a lot of value to anyone who is interested in the biblical text because "translators are the closest readers of a text" and material prepared to help them will potentially help anyone. As mentioned before, the TIPs tool is meant to serve both the translation community and the general public.

You can find the records as in here: https://tips.translation.bible/tip_verse/mic-68/ and for every verse of the Old Testament.

P.S. All of the Translator's Handbooks for the New Testament and the Deuterocanonicals have been now added as well.

Fantastic.  Thanks for making these valuable helps available.  One question:  Are you also posting the UBS handbooks in French.  I hope so

Yes, I should. Do I need to ask you for permission or Lénart?

And since I'm talking to you: Could you please look at this entry https://tips.translation.bible/story/divine-gender-pronoun-for-god/ and tell me what needs to change for the Kru languages?

Re the first question, these are all UBS handbooks with the same copyright issues as any UBS handbook, but yes, the current editor is Lénart de Regt and he would be the one to contact. I would be thrilled beyond belief if these could/would be made available.

Re the second point, I do not find this entry acceptable for KRU and would be happy to write something up if given time (currently quite busy).  But to be honest I even find the first paragraph slightly odd because it talks about God being non gender and then goes into the English gender system.  I also think it is very unwise to just put out there capitalized forms for God (He, Him, His) without a thorough explanation.  Given that pronouns are so in vogue these days (smile), it might be worth giving more substance and content here. (???)  My email is lynellzogbo@gmail.com.  If you want me to help in anyway, such as writing a section on Kru, I would be happy to help.  There are some very interesting questions arising as to use of HUMAN and NON HUMAN pronouns in relation to God.  The discussion on Chinese deciding when Jesus is human and when he is divine, as a translation consultant, makes me feel quite ?nervous?  Here to help in any way I can (retired, not sitting around by any means, but able to help)

Jost Zetzsche  Thank you for all your work on this! Do you have plans to make the Bible Translator journal available inside TIPs? It's behind a paywall at the moment.

Thanks. The Bible Translator is available for free at https://archive.translation.bible/tbt/TBT.html until 2000 but you're right about the paywall after that. I don't think that it would make sense to add all of the archives to the TIPs tool but we do make extensive use of TBT articles before and after 2000 as you can see here: https://tips.translation.bible/tip_source/the-bible-translator/.

What I would really like to add are for instance SIL's Translator's Notes but I have unfortunately not been given permission to do that.
