It is the Nida Institute initiating this exploration Our intention is for this exploration to be sustainable. The subject matter is translation beyond the printed page.

Translation Studies in General Theoretical Framework of Semiotics

Create a working environment in which the

participants can advance the theoretical and practical work Stimulate the participants own research and production initiatives

All communication, translation and interpretation of

the Bible is inter-semiotic An inter-semiotic approach to translating, communicating and interpreting religious discourse is essentially democratic A respect for the norms or constraints that any signsystem meets and that it must negotiate as it deals with the possibilities and limits of making meaning out of religious discourse through translation

Three laboratories: History Theory Practice

Short Term: Participant Evaluation of 2011 IST seminar White paper 2012 follow up meeting

Long Term: Seminar series Publications Impact Reports

Is the label "translation" useful or not in a post-print world of

many communication models and strategies? What would we call the process and product if not translation? What are the institutional and professional forces within the academy, publishing world, and religious communities that are affected by a change in label or by including non-print work under this label? What does your own work in IST lead you to think about the potential and the limits of traditional print translation? In a world of inter-semiotic translation how do we measure success at the level of translation if not with traditional tests such as fidelity, faithfulness, equivalence, and adequacy?
