Why keep the Biblical Terms Rendering Window open during translation?
I've had this discussion on the PT Supporters list already, but since I am moving the arena to MAP, I'm moving it here and providing you with the synopsis.
The Renderings window is intended to be kept open beside the target text, showing the biblical terms that are present in the current verse by default. As you translate, you take note of how the word was rendered in the past and you record new renderings. You may also record the reason you chose to render the word in a specific way and you can discuss how to render the term with others on your team by using a rendering discussion note.
I was getting some push back from people who said that looking at renderings would distract translators during drafting and should only be used at a later stage. Most of the feedback I received aligned with my paragraph above, and my favorite response comes from Reinier de Blois:
Doing it at any later stage is much more problematic. While you are drafting you have the best understanding of the context and you are much more inclined to respect the context.
If you do it at any later stage, you will be much more inclined to harmonize, and, since you are less aware of the context and the reasons why certain choices were made, whatever creativity was present during the drafting stage will be properly strangled without remorse at that later stage.
Translators need to be properly trained in how to use the renderings tool. That is the only way to make sure that the tool will not be abused.
