UBS CONSULTANT TRAINING ORIENTATION, TRAINING, OR EDUCATION?HISTORY Traditional UBS Translation Consultant requirements: Ph.D. required for application to Translation Consultant position. Approved areas of concentration: Biblical Studies, Linguistics, Anthropology (Cultural Studies). Biblical languages considered indispensable. Several years of apprenticeship (TC-in training) to gain experience. One further year of study in a complementary field. Further readings in complementary fields (Biblical Studies, Linguistics, Anthropology).READINGS A recent attempt to update the reading list: Map / BloomfireUBS RESTRUCTURING - 2011 There were approximately 100 UBS TCs in the late 1990s. This was reduced to 40+ by 2011, though there were about the same number of local BS TCs by this time. In 2011 the former UBS TC role was replaced by that of the GTA, and the number reduced to just 12 worldwide. The rest were either hired by local Bible Societies or TSC as TCs, or lost their positions altogether. That led to the current TO (TC) 3-year cycle of training (1 week twice a year=total of 6 weeks), with GTAs doing the training.UBS RESTRUCTURING - 2011 The new cycle of training did NOT replace the former requirements for both formal education (which UBS does not provide) and field experience under the supervision of a senior consultant.UBS RESTRUCTURING - 2011 There is also a continued appreciation and encouragement of the pursuit of individual interests on the part of consultants and the sharing of those interests with their colleagues.A partial list of special interest areas (beyond biblical languages/studies, linguistics, cultural and translation studies, and translation-related technology) within the UBS translation team: Semiotics Sign language(s) Cognitive studies Social psychology Orality and performance Special topics in biblical interpretation (e.g. Ecology, Gender) Special audiences: e.g. creole and marginalized languages, Muslim audiences, et. al.TO TRAININGUBS We teach one course every year (in a three-year cycle) in each continent plus one course in Misano, where all the TOs in training from all continents come together. TO TRAININGUBS There is some flexibility in the cycle, as potential TOs need English to attend Misano. Thus two weeks a year are often provided in regions with less English. Also, there is a great deal of contextualization done in order to communicate locally as well as simply due to the different teachers involved.TO TRAININGUBS For full graduation, a person needs to complete at least 6 courses (many take as many as 8) and then write an article on some aspect of their working with a language in Bible Translation. The article must get published in a respectable journal.THREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING Week 1 General Introduction The Digital Translation Manual Introduction to Paratext, Source Language Tools, TMS Introduction to Translation Studies Introduction to Relevance Theory Introduction to Cultural Studies Introduction to Inter-semiotics (non-print media, etc.) Discussion groupsTHREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING Week 2 Translation Studies --What is translation?THREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING Week 3 Technology and TranslationIntegrated Approach --Paratext --Source Language Tools --TMS --Translation theoryTHREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING Week 4 Management Skills and Translation Project Management --Leadership development --Leadership skills with respect to stakeholdersTHREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING Week 5 Linguistics --SemanticsTHREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING Week 6 HermeneuticsTHREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING Week 7 Ancient Languages: Hebrew--Aramaic--Greek --Advanced readings --Exegetical problems in translation THREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING Week 8 Distance Learning Courses - Ancient Near Eastern Culturesor Greco Roman Cultures --Directed readings so as to understand the different world-viewsTHREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING Week 9 Case Studies --Different kinds of translations --Laboratory experienceTHREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING Week 10 Elective - Philosophical Hermeneutics --Understanding the many approaches that derive from thinkers as Gadamer, Habermas, Ricoeur, and others who have influenced Biblical ExegesisTHREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING FINAL PAPERPublishable article on a translation issueTHREE-YEAR PLAN FOR TO TRAINING

Dear Bob, Please note a new Memorandum of Understanding this year of 2016 between UBS and JCBT (Jerusalem Center for Bible Translators). It opens the field of "Context Criticism" for UBS personnel via training in two week courses in the Land of the Bible. www.bibletranslators.org
