Editor's Foreword

I begin this issue of JOT with thanks to SIL’s Steve Nicolle, associate professor at the Canada Institute of Linguistics. Last year he brought to our attention that he would be willing to lead an effort to present research on the important language feature of conditionals, and how these are handled in source and receptor languages. We readily accepted, and Steve became a de facto guest editor for this issue. We are grateful for his leadership on this and his superb assistance to bring this issue to fruition.

Steve has been the solo author of three articles in this issue, and a coauthor with one of his students on another. He presents research ranging from a broad sweep of conditionals in the New Testament to those specifically in Galatians, and in the Gospels. He also addresses one of the conditional formulae, the “unless/if not” framing, namely the aspects involved in translating ἐὰν μή.

SIL’s Stephen Levinsohn has long been a leader in NT Greek studies, especially as the field relates to translation, and his contribution to this issue is well noted. He brings a wealth of scholarly experience to bear in his article on translating post-nuclear conditional clauses in the Greek New Testament. Also, Rebekah Mészároš has applied her research on NT Greek conditionals to her work as a linguist and linguistic consultant-in-training in the Mara cluster project in Tanzania, describing the translation of conditionals in two closely related Bantu languages, Kabwa and Simbiti.

Finally, one of the jewels of this issue is the extensive bibliography on conditionals, offered by the husband-wife Greek NT research team of Rachel and Michael Aubrey. Their bibliography spans studies on conditionals in Ancient Greek, published conditionals research in languages other than Ancient Greek or English framed within geographical areal studies, and wide studies of conditionals in linguistics and typology. Importantly, they have also gathered research within the blooming field of Sign Language linguistics and translation research, herein specifically as it relates to conditionals. I predict that this article will be a go-to resource for years to come for students and scholars who are delving into the research on this important facet of language study and translation.
